We recommend that you download and print the map below before you leave so that you can carry it with you during your stay. It will help you get around, as most taxi drivers only read Chinese. Click the image below to download.
Below are several ways to reach the conference site depending on your travel plans. Our recommendation is to fly directly into Hangzhou from an international airport; however, flying into Shanghai is a great option if you plan to come early to visit the city. Other, less convenient options are to fly into Shanghai's Pudong Airport and arrange transportation to Hangzhou or to fly into Beijing and then take a connecting flight to Hangzhou. Details to help you make your travel arrangements are below. Please also print the English/Chinese map above before you leave and carry it with you in Hangzhou, as most taxi drivers only read Chinese.
We recommend that people coming to CSCW fly directly into the airport in Hangzhou through an international hub (Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, or Tokyo). Doing so generally is more reliable (e.g. avoiding domestic delays), is faster getting through customs, is significantly easier for those not familiar with Chinese transportation systems, and is about the same price as most other options, particularly if you book tickets early. Once you arrive, the Hyatt Regency is located 30 km from Hangzhou's Xiaoshan Airport. Below are several options to reach the Hyatt.
If you would like to share transportation from the Hangzhou or Shanghai (Pudong) airport to the Hyatt with another CSCW attendee and you have a room reserved at the Hyatt, please go to the Hyatt Concierge Service at hangzhouregency.hyatte-concierge.com (you will need your Hyatt reservation confirmation number). On this website, you can reserve a car, paying particular attention to the pick-up location, and enter your flight information. Important: To share a car, you must put a note in the comment section that reads “If another CSCW attendee is arriving on the same flight, I would like to share transportation.” Please note that, due to changes in flight schedules, the Hyatt will not be able to confirm whether or not transportation will be shared until your arrival at the airport, so this does not guarantee that you will share a car and you must be prepared to pay the full amount of the transportation service you reserved if the Hyatt staff is not able to match you with another CSCW attendee. If the Hyatt is able to match you with another CSCW attendee and transportation is shared, the cost of transportation will be split between passengers and applied to your hotel bill.
A taxi from the Hangzhou's Xiaoshan Airport to downtown Hangzhou costs approximately CNY100 ($15) and takes about 40 minutes. Only use official taxis (those with a taxi sign on the car), and be aware that Hangzhou taxis can be hard to hail.
Cost: CNY100 ($15)
There are shuttle buses that depart from the north side of Exit 5 (Arrival Hall) on the first floor of the terminal building. They take approximately an hour to the city center and depart every 15 minutes from 9:30am to 5:00pm and every 30 minutes during other times of the day/night. The shuttle stops at Merchant Marco Hotel, which is approximately 800 meters from the Hyatt Regency. More information on shuttles from Xiaoshan Airport can be found here.
Cost: CNY20 ($3)
Flying through Shanghai is a great option if you plan to come a day or two early and enjoy the cosmopolitan feeling of the bustling city. You can then take the fast train from downtown Shanghai to Hangzhou and a quick taxi ride from the train station to the Hyatt. Important: Train tickets between Shanghai and Hangzhou sell out early, so please plan on getting your tickets 18-24 hours ahead. Generally, your hotel will do this for you, for a fee.
Trains depart Shanghai for Hangzhou frequently each day and night. Some are more direct and faster than others. The fastest is the new "G" bullet train line, which leaves from Shanghai Hongqiao station and takes approximately 45 minutes. Fares for the bullet train line are approximately $14. You can search for a complete listing of trains between Shanghai and Hangzhou here. Be sure to note which train station you will depart from. When arriving in Hangzhou, the Hyatt is 4 km (10 minutes by car) from the Hangzhou Station. Taxi fare is approximately CNY12 ($2) to the West Lake area.
Cost: Train: $14 + Taxi to hotel: CNY12 ($2)
Also possible, but less convenient, is flying to Shanghai (Pudong Airport) and arranging transportation to Hangzhou directly from the airport (if you do not intend to stay in Shanghai first). Our recommendation is to arrange for a car from the Hyatt on the Hyatt e-concierge website. It is a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic, but it is also possible to take a taxi, shuttle, or train from Pudong
There are several ways to get to the train station from Pudong Airport; the easiest are by bus or taxi. Between 7:50am and 11:00pm, you can take Airport Bus Line No. 7 directly from Pudong Airport to Shanghai South Railway Station. The bus departs every 10 to 30 minutes during those hours and costs CNY20 ($3). The ride is about 1 hour 45 minutes. More information on buses from the airport is available here. If you are arriving at night, you will need to take a taxi to the train station. Pudong Airport is approximately 50 km from Shanghai South Railway Station, so the ride will take about an hour and will cost somewhere around CNY200 ($30).
Trains depart Shanghai South Station for Hangzhou Station frequently each day and night, with the only gap in service being between 12:47am and 4:18am. Some are more direct and faster than others. Fares start at around CNY29 ($4) and go up depending on the chosen fare class. A complete listing of trains between Shanghai South Station and Hangzhou Station can be found here. If you fly into Beijing, there are several domestic flights a day to Hangzhou's Xiaoshan Airport. Flight time is approximately 2 hours. On this route, be prepared for delays.
Taxis are a preferred way to get around if your destination isn’t accessible via foot or boat. Important: Taxis change shifts at 4-5pm, so it is nearly impossible to get a taxi anywhere in Hangzhou during this time. If you need a taxi between 4-5pm, please make arrangements ahead of time through the hotel.
Please be sure to print the map image at the top of the page before you leave and carry it with you in Hangzhou. It includes the name and address of the Hyatt in Chinese, which you can show to taxi drivers, and it also has the hotel phone number in case of emergency. Additionally, you should have the hotel write out your destinations in Chinese before you venture out in Hangzhou by taxi.
